Irate youths invade police post in Niger State, kill two suspects
There was pandemonium at Bangi village in Mariga local government area of Niger state when some irate youths numbering about ten invaded the Butchi police station in the area, killing two suspects while some other suspected armed robbers escaped from the police cell.
There mission to the police post it was gathered, was to carry out jungle justice on some suspected robbers who have engaged in the constant theft of motorcycles from their owners in the past few weeks in the area thereby denying them of their livelihood.
However, they met a stone wall on getting to the police post as the men and officers on duty restricted their movement towards getting close to the station to carry out their task. The angry youths who were said to have reinforced later, overpowered the police on duty, damaged the doors and windows and forced their way into the cell where some of the suspects escaped.
The third suspect it was gathered, was however rescued by the Divisional Police officer who quickly ferried him out of the station to Kontagora Area Commanders office for protection.
Contacted, the state police command spokesman, ASP Richard Oguche who confirmed the story said police are now trailing those youths involved in the mob and promised that they will be brought to book. He said besides killing two of the suspects, some other suspects escaped while properties worth millions of naira were also destroyed at the police station.
Meanwhile, five of the irate youths have been arrested while police are still hunting for others involved in the dastardly act. Police said they will be charged to court for culpable homicide and
